Paper on Concussions

National Football League players are getting these concussions and not getting the right treatment. The effects of having multiple concussions included players getting major diseases that can affect them for the rest of their lives. These diseases include Alzheimer and Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects how the person moves, and how the person speaks and writes (Medicalnews). About 14% of all former players will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and another 14% will develop moderate dementia (Diamond). Concussions can play a significantly role in getting future brain diseases, if the player cannot get the right amount treatment on time it can have an effect as well. Tim Shaw, a six-year NFL veteran who was diagnosed with ALS shortly after he turned 30–a very young age to be diagnosed–suffered many concussions during his 6 seasons in the National Football League. Wes Welker has had three concussions in ten months. “Three in 10 months should be concerning for anyone,” said Chris Nowinski, co-founder of the Sports Legacy Institute, which advocates for the treatment and prevention of brain trauma in athletes. “If Wes Welker comes back in two weeks and has a fourth in one year, that’s the kind of history that could turn a temporary problem into years of symptoms.(Amour). Brain Injuries like these can cause the player long term effects if one does not wear the guardian cap.
